My fiancé and I visited Rooms To Go this past Saturday with the intention of purchasing furniture, but unfortunately our experience with the sales representative left a lot to be desired. Throughout our visit, several interactions came across as dismissive and condescending rather than helpful. When we asked about the price of a sofa, the representative’s response felt more focused on correcting us than assisting us. Later, while I was having a conversation with my fiancé about how pricing is displayed on showroom items, the representative inserted himself into the discussion to disagree with my opinion, even though I wasn’t speaking to him directly. The most frustrating interaction occurred when my fiancé asked about the sofa’s fabric and how to properly care for it. Rather than explaining the material in a way that would help a customer understand its characteristics and maintenance requirements, we were simply told “I mean . .it’s chenille” and that it was delicate. As customers, we were asking questions because we wanted information before making a purchase. We expected guidance, not responses that made us feel as though we should already know the answers. I understand that no one intends to come across negatively, and it’s possible this representative did not mean any offense. However, the overall tone of the interaction felt condescending and unwelcoming. Customer service is not just about providing information but also about how that information is communicated. My fiancé could tell I was becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the interaction, and instead of completing our purchase with the representative, we left the store and ordered the furniture online ourselves. We loved the furniture and still chose to buy it, but the in-store customer service experience was disappointing enough that we did not feel comfortable moving forward with that salesperson. The furniture itself was beautiful, but the experience with the sales representative made what should have been an exciting purchase feel unnecessarily frustrating.
